In-home family session with teenagers
When most people think of in-home photo sessions, they picture sleepy newborns wrapped in blankets and parents soaking in those first few weeks of baby snuggles. But your home is a great location for your photos during any season in life. In-home sessions aren’t just for newborns. They’re for toddlers learning how to climb on the couch, big kids building forts in the living room. Your teenage children might feel more comfortable having their photos taken at home instead of a public park or beach. So if you’ve been thinking about switching things up this year, staying home for your family session might be exactly what you didn’t know you needed.
Why an in-home session works so well with teens
You’ll do more than “just posing” We’ll photograph your family doing things you actually love—playing games, baking, hanging out on the couch—whatever feels most natural for you. These shared moments often bring out the best, most genuine expressions. Your photos can be filled with as much action as you desire.
The baby phase is behind you, and your space reflects that. No need to worry about clearing out toys or baby gear—your home feels like you now, and it shows. The photos will reflect the season you’re in, not the one you’ve already outgrown.
It’s way more comfortable than posing in public. Let’s be honest—teens aren’t always thrilled about family photos, especially in busy parks or beaches. At home, they can relax and be themselves without the pressure of an audience.
What to do during your in-home session with older children
In-home sessions with big kids and teens are such a special chance to slow down and capture your family just as you are.
Start by thinking about why do you want your family captured at home. Is it the slow Saturday mornings that you love so much. Do you want to capture someone’s birthday celebration, your homeschooling journey, welcoming a new baby or managing life solo-parenting during deployment. Whatever your reason you have, your home holds that story. And it’s the perfect place to press pause and hold onto this season.
Next, think about what feels real for your family. What do you actually love doing together? The best photos happen when everyone is relaxed and doing something familiar. A few easy ideas:
Baking together or sharing coffee in the kitchen
Playing a game at the table
Hanging on the couch, laughing or just talking
A lighthearted pillow fight (yes, teens still get into it sometimes!)
Doing makeup with your little daughter or having a dress-up party
Sitting on the porch with a cup of tea
Running around in the backyard or playing a quick game (yep, we can include outside too)
You don’t have to perform or act a certain way. These sessions are calm, flexible, and centered on what feels true to your family. Just show up, be yourselves, and let the little moments unfold. I will guide you throughout the entire session so you don’t have to have a plan ready either. We will go with the family’s flow.
What to wear for your in-home family session
Let’s keep it simple: wear something that feels like you. The goal isn’t to look fancy—it’s to feel confident and comfortable, like the best version of yourself. Choose outfits that you can move in, that flatter your shape, and that look good with the colors and light in your home.
Think cozy dress, jeans with a soft knit or button-up, or even a simple jumpsuit. Skip the yoga pants this time and pick something that makes you feel pulled together without feeling stiff.
Choose colors that complement your home—neutrals, soft tones, light textures. Creams, warm grays, gentle greens always photograph beautifully indoors. These tones bring in light and help the focus stay on your family connection instead of eye-catching outfits.
A few more quick tips:
Make sure everyone looks like they’re dressed for the same season.
Avoid bold logos or graphics that might distract from the moment.
No shoes needed! And yes—no socks either. Bare feet feel natural and photograph so well in-home.
If you’re ever unsure, you can always send me a few outfit options. My clients always receive a free access to Style and Select App that will style you head to toe in minutes! I’m happy to the outfits together for you and you can just add your personal touch.
Getting ready for your in-home family session with teens
You don’t need a picture-perfect house. These sessions are meant to feel real and relaxed. Still, a little prep can help things flow smoothly and make sure you love your photos. Here’s what to focus on:
Tidy up—but don’t stress.
If there’s something you wouldn’t want in the background of a photo, go ahead and tuck it away. No need to deep clean. Just a quick sweep of the main areas (like the kitchen counters, coffee table, and nightstands) is plenty. Clutter is distracting on photos so start by removing things couple days before our session.
Look at your light.
The best light in most homes shows up mid to late morning. Around 10am, walk through your space and see which rooms feel the brightest and coziest—that’s where we’ll probably start. Natural light makes all the difference.
Think about what feels true to your family.
What do your children love doing with you? Is it pancakes in the kitchen, a card game, or just chilling on the couch with music playing? These sessions are about capturing your connection, so think about the small moments that make your family your family.
