The key to a successful family photo shoot

We’ve all been there—scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest, admiring those dreamy family photos filled with love and connection, wondering, How do they make it look so effortless? The outfits are perfect, the smiles are genuine, and somehow, the kids are actually cooperating.

I get it. Every mom feels a mix of excitement and nerves before a family session, myself included! This is something you do just a handful of times each year, and you want everything to come together beautifully. You want to feel confident, and you hope your little ones will be on their best behavior.

I am here to prepare you for your session to make it easy once we are at the location. Preparation matters and makes a huge difference! Let’s dive into three simple but game-changing tips to help your session go smoothly and leave you with photos you’ll treasure forever.

Styling your family for a photo session

  • Work with your photographer to plan your outfits. Some colors and styles photograph better than others, and your location plays a big role in outfit choices.

  • Have everyone’s clothes ready, ironed, and laid out at least a week before your session. This takes a huge load of stress off your plate. The last thing you want is to scramble for outfits on the day of your shoot. Make sure everything fits well, coordinates nicely, and—most importantly—that your family is comfortable (or at least willing to wear it for an hour!).

  • What you wear makes a big difference in how your photos turn out. I love helping my clients choose outfits and have written several blog posts on what to wear for different locations and seasons. Every client gets access to my wardrobe styling services, including a free membership to the Style & Select app, making it easy to put together a look you love. Thoughtful styling elevates your images, creating a timeless, cohesive feel.

Showing-up excited and carefree at your session

For one hour, give yourself permission to pause the usual discipline. Instead of saying “No,” try redirecting their energy. You booked this session because you love your family and want to capture that love—so let’s make it shine.

During the shoot, let your kids be kids. Laugh with them, embrace the chaos, and always smile back. Look at them with your whole heart. Hug, kiss, hold hands, play with their hair, breathe them in. Chase your toddler, toss them in the air, spin them around. Yes, you might be exhausted by the end, but you’ll also be so glad you allowed these beautiful moments to unfold naturally.

Please don’t point and say, “Look at the photographer and say cheese!” I’ve had so many sweet moments interrupted by a pointing finger in the frame (trust me, it happens all the time!). And don’t worry about forcing perfect behavior. If kids feel pressured, they’ll remember that stress next time. Let’s keep it fun and positive.

Encourage everyone—especially Dad and the teens

This goes hand in hand with giving your kids a great experience, but let’s not forget about dad! Chances are, he’s not exactly counting down the days to family photos. So, cheer him on, give him extra attention, and make sure the car ride to the session is a peaceful one. The more supported he feels, the more relaxed and natural he’ll be in the photos. And yes, I always carve out time for just the two of you—because your relationship is just as important to capture.

The same goes for your teenagers. Being in front of a camera can feel awkward at that age. Encourage them, make them laugh, and most importantly, never put them down during the session. I once had a parent critique their teen while I was photographing him, and it broke my heart. No one wants to feel judged while they’re trying to look natural.

Bonus tip: Pick the right photographer, like me:)

It’s so important to find a photographer who fits your family’s vibe. Take a look at their portfolio, explore their website, and learn about their session flow. Will they be a good match for your family’s energy? Will your kids respond better to someone high-energy or a calm, patient presence? Choosing the right photographer makes all the difference in how comfortable and natural your family feels during the session—so take the time to find someone you connect with!
