What to wear for your family session I Anacortes, Washington

Choosing your outfits doesn’t have to be stressful, trust me.

Don’t let the clothes outshine your personality and genuine smiles. You are not a fan of dresses!? That’s ok, wear your favorite pair of jeans.

Do your children get upset when you are putting their brand-new clothes on? That’s ok too. Let them choose what they want to wear. Give them two options (that YOU previously picked out and let them decide which one is their favorite).

Don’t force your husband to wear something he would never wear otherwise. He won’t feel himself and that will show in the photographs at the end.

6 rules u sould to follow

Please know that your outfit choices ARE super important and will elevate your photographs. Let’s dive into the 6 rules to follow or break when styling your family for a lifestyle session.

WHAT ARE THE TO DOS’

  • Mom chooses her outfit first. I think this is pretty clear.

  • Coordinate, do not match everyone else (blue jeans and white shirts for everyone is a “no, no” anymore).

  • Solid colors with one subtle pattern per family unit. Colors need to complement each other.

  • NO shoes is my favorite option for beach photos.

  • Choose clothes that allow movement.

  • Combine textures and layers or spicy it up with a trendy hat.

What are the best colors? Go for warm earth tones that are pleasing to the eye, complement each other and the landscape. Add some cream/beige, off-white or pastel colors to your outfit to break it up a little. You can wear a hat, a jacket or a cardigan to add layers of different fabrics.

Don’t forget to empty everyone’s pockets (even husband’s back pockets). I can carry the car key for you during the session and I guarantee you won’t forget to take it back :) Leave your phones and sunglasses in the car as well.

Beach sessions. It’s hard to go wrong with beach session outfits. The ocean and the sand create a neutral, pleasing background and you can easily dress in that color scheme. Remember that you and your children will probably get splashed a little bit. You won’t need shoes for this one so don’t worry about them. Can you believe me if I say that blue is NOT my favorite color for a beach session? I will always suggest to complement the colors of sunset, the tall grass and sand. Warm, neutral tones are TOP! Because let’s be honest the ocean isn’t truly blue. (I lived in Mediterranean, so I am spoiled:)

Sustainability. I truly believe there already is a perfect outfit in your closet for this photo shoot. Just look again your might find a special piece that you loved when buying but you didn’t have many opportunities to wear since. Visit your local thrift store! Do you want to add a lace cardigan or a cute hat to your outfit? It’s a perfect chance to go explore what thrift stores have to offer. If you feel like you need to do some shopping before your session, try some sustainable brands that have amazing collections, are super comfortable, great colors for photo shoots plus they try to be better for the environment. If you are looking for something super special, try out Rent the runway. It’s so much fun and they offer maternity outfits too! Here are some more examples of sustainable brands Everlane, Love and Confuse, Mata Traders . More to come…

WHAT ARE THE DON’TS :

  • No loud colors, patterns and logos and signs.

  • No dark colors such as black on navy blue and avoid pure white too.

  • Diaper exposure - don’t forget to cover up diapers aka overalls are best.

  • No digital watches or baseball hats.

Maternity session. Before I devote an entire Blog post to maternity styling, please remember one thing. The most important advice for all the moms-to-be, is to wear an outfit that will embrace the baby bump. Don’t go for shapeless dresses or baggy sweaters. Alternately, choose a dress/top that clearly defines your chest and the baby. Check out these stores and rentals Boob , La Belle Bump, Mamabumprentals .
